active leg the leg that is being applied with control
aids the means used by the rider to communicate to the horse the desired movement.
bend a position of the horse consisting of an even lateral curve from poll to tail.
braced back a position of the rider's hips in which the pelvis is titled downward and forward providing a driving force.
cadence the regular reoccurrence of the footfall, rhythm.
collection the ability of the horse to shift the center of gravity back to the hindquarters becoming elevated.
diagonal control the harmonious use of the contralateral hand and leg in applying the aids for a movement.
diminished aid the aid which is in position to act if the need arises with only very light pressure; the passive aid.
dominant aid the aid which is instrumental in producing the force which directs the movement; the active aid.
dressage the art of riding with control and balance to produce harmony between horse and rider; training.
flexion the process of establishing lateral bend.
flexion rein the rein on the side of the lateral bend of the horse which assists in establishing flexion.
impulsion the readiness of the horse to move forward.
inside the area around which lateral bend of the horse is made, concave side.
near side the left side of the horse.
off side the right side of the horse.
opposing rein the rein opposite the side of lateral bend which is applied against the horse's neck during flexion
outside The convex side of the lateral bend of the horse.
ramene' a position of the horse in which the neck is elevated and the head is at the verticle.
suppleness the ease with which the horse bends, the lack of resistance to bend.
